Bitcoin Stays Above $114K as Whales Accumulate Supply and Shorts Adjust

Good Morning, Asia: Market Movements and Insights

Welcome to your daily summary of key market developments in Asia during U.S. hours. Designed to keep traders and investors informed, this briefing encapsulates significant stories in cryptocurrency, equities, and commodities.

Bitcoin’s Measured Recovery

Bitcoin has shown a notable recovery this week, rising from $110,000 to approximately $114,000. This uptick reflects a recalibrated market rather than a breakout, according to Glassnode’s data. Since mid-October, about 62,000 BTC have shifted from long-term inactive wallets, marking roughly 0.4% of the illiquid supply. This shift indicates that some long-held assets are being reintroduced into the market, as whales continue to absorb this supply. Interestingly, wallets holding significant balances have increased their positions, while smaller holders, with 0.1 to 10 BTC, have been selling off their assets since late 2024. This dynamic illustrates a redistribution phase where large holders accumulate while weaker hands reduce their risk exposure.

Stable Derivatives Landscape

In the derivatives markets, leverage appears to be balanced, with $4.1 billion in open interest shared nearly evenly between long and short positions. However, there is a slight tilt toward shorts, as seen in the recent $413 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours. Notably, about $337 million of these liquidations were from shorts, indicating a moderate market flush rather than a dramatic short squeeze. Such conditions allow for a healthy environment for Bitcoin to stabilize without triggering panic buying or a disruption in current positions.

Market Outlook for Bitcoin

As Bitcoin oscillates between $113,000 and $116,000, the market appears poised for a period of neutrality. This steadiness comes amid expectations of a dovish Federal Reserve, leaving market participants to question what the next catalyst for significant movement will be. The accumulation by whales, combined with the gradual easing of illiquid supply, contributes to a sense of cautious optimism among traders.

Ether Takes the Spotlight

Ether has also experienced a refreshing climb, rising to $4,186, marking a 6% increase in just 24 hours. This surge can largely be attributed to traders shifting toward higher-beta assets following Bitcoin’s stability. Yet, on-chain and derivatives data reveal that this movement might be more driven by momentum rather than strong fresh inflows expected in a thriving bull market. Ether’s short-term performance has outpaced Bitcoin, highlighting its potential for significant volatility.

Positive Trends in Gold and Global Equities

In the commodities arena, gold is on an upward trajectory, with JPMorgan projecting it could reach $5,055 per ounce by late 2026 and potentially $6,000 by 2028. Analysts suggest that the recent decline in gold prices represents a healthy consolidation phase within a broader trend fueled by anticipated Fed rate cuts, concerns about stagflation, and increasing demand from central banks. Meanwhile, the Nikkei 225 in Japan has surpassed the 50,000 mark for the first time, signaling increased optimism regarding U.S.-China trade discussions and anticipated domestic demand expansion under Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Takaichi.

Broader Market Implications

To wrap up, today’s market movements reveal a complex interplay between cryptocurrencies, equities, and commodities. Bitcoin’s measured recovery reflects both whale accumulation and reduced selling pressure from smaller holders, creating a neutral market environment. As traders cautiously anticipate what comes next, those involved in the cryptocurrency sphere and traditional markets should keep a close watch on both technical and economic indicators. Understanding these subtleties will be crucial for making informed investment decisions in a continually evolving financial landscape.
