Wahrstätter highlighted constraints in consensus layer client specifications that make surpassing the 36 million gas threshold infeasible without significant protocol upgrades.
Ethereum’s consensus layer specifications enforce a maximum uncompressed block size of 10 mebibytes for efficient gossip propagation. Increasing the gas limit to 60 million per block would breach this limit, leading to propagation failures, missed validator slots, and potential network destabilization. These restrictions aim to mitigate risks such as denial-of-service attacks by preventing larger blocks from overwhelming network nodes and exposing vulnerabilities.
While blocks up to 36 million gas remain within acceptable gossip size limits for seamless propagation and consensus stability, exceeding this threshold risks creating valid blocks that fail to propagate. This disruption could impact validators and reduce network efficiency. With limited empirical data on network performance under higher gas limits, core developers stress the importance of a cautious approach to ensure Ethereum’s security and reliability.
Parithosh Jayanthi, a member of the Ethereum Foundation’s ethPandaOps unit, also emphasizes the importance of testing and data collection to assess the trade-offs of higher gas limits. Ethereum developers are gearing up for the Pectra 2 network upgrade, which includes proposals like EIP-7623 and EIP-7691 to lay the groundwork for higher gas limits. These proposals aim to reduce worst-case block sizes, mitigate DoS risks, and provide empirical data on network performance under higher storage and propagation demands.
