The Ethereum price trajectory has been bearish for quite some time, with the struggles intensifying recently due to the market turmoil. This decline is also reflected in the ETHBTC pair, which has hit a 5-year low. In contrast, Bitcoin is showing signs of recovery, thanks to factors like its digital gold status and discussions around a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Crypto analyst Nic Puckrin has pointed out the reasons behind Ethereum’s underperformance against Bitcoin. Despite being considered superior in terms of utility, Ethereum is facing challenges such as profitability divergence, MVRV Slip, and demand disparity. Bitcoin holders are currently holding higher unrealized gains compared to ETH holders, impacting the price of Ethereum negatively.

The fundamental and narrative differences between Bitcoin and Ethereum are also contributing to the decline in ETH’s price. Bitcoin’s clear narrative as digital gold and its popularity with institutional investors contrast with Ethereum’s complex story involving fees burn, DeFi, and NFTs. Additionally, competition from other blockchains and the lack of significant demand for Ethereum are further driving down its price against Bitcoin.

Despite the ongoing market crash and economic uncertainties, Puckrin believes that global liquidity could benefit both Bitcoin and Ethereum. While Bitcoin is likely to see a stronger recovery, Ethereum could also benefit from the rising liquidity. This could lead to a better performance of the ETHBTC pair in the future if the current challenges facing Ethereum are addressed.

In conclusion, the Ethereum price decline against Bitcoin can be attributed to various factors such as low demand, stagnant DeFi and NFT activity, and the narrative differences between the two assets. While Bitcoin’s clear narrative and ETF popularity are supporting its price, Ethereum’s complexity and lack of significant demand are causing its underperformance. However, with the potential influx of global liquidity into the market, there is a possibility for both Bitcoin and Ethereum to see some recovery in the future.
