Vitalik Buterin Aims to Simplify Ethereum to Be “As Easy as Bitcoin” by 2030

Simplifying Ethereum: Vitalik Buterin’s Vision for a More Accessible Blockchain

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his vision for a future where the Ethereum blockchain becomes as straightforward as Bitcoin. In a blog post, he emphasized the importance of simplicity in blockchain design, suggesting that the minimalist approach of Bitcoin holds vital lessons for Ethereum. He articulated how Bitcoin’s elegant protocol not only makes the technology more accessible but also reduces infrastructure costs and security risks. Buterin’s call for Ethereum to embrace simplicity reflects a broader strategy aimed at enhancing efficiency and robustness in its architecture.

The Benefits of Simplicity in Blockchain Protocols

Buterin argues that a simple protocol is essential for long-term resilience and scalability. He underscores that Bitcoin’s architecture is easy enough for a high school student to understand, which fosters broader engagement. By simplifying Ethereum, the blockchain could dramatically lower development and operational costs while minimizing potential security vulnerabilities. However, he acknowledged that Ethereum’s development has at times strayed from this principle, contributing to cost overruns, security risks, and a culture of insularity within its research and development teams.

The Beam Chain: Simplifying Consensus

One of the pivotal advancements towards simplification is the introduction of the proposed Beam Chain, put forth by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake. This new consensus layer aims to streamline the existing beacon chain by implementing a 3-slot finality redesign. Buterin highlighted that this approach would reduce complexity by eliminating confusing concepts such as separate slots, epochs, and sync committees. The proposed Beam Chain would allow for implementation with around 200 lines of code, making it more accessible for developers. The reduction in the number of active validators will also enhance security, enabling simpler implementations of rules essential for protocol operation.

Rethinking the Execution Layer

In addition to improvements in the consensus layer, Buterin has advocated for a significant overhaul of Ethereum’s execution layer. He proposed replacing the current Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) contract language with RISC-V, which he argues can enhance execution efficiency by up to 100 times while maintaining simplicity. The challenge will be ensuring that existing applications remain compatible, necessitating a plan to transition the code gradually without affecting current users. By carefully delineating areas of complexity, Buterin envisions a path where developers can focus on optimizing and understanding the base layer of the protocol without unnecessary complications.

Establishing Protocol-Wide Standards

For Ethereum to become more streamlined, Buterin suggests adopting uniform standards across its ecosystem. He advocates for the use of a single erasure code for data availability, P2P broadcasting, and distributed storage. This harmonization would not only minimize the codebase but also improve efficiency and verifiability. To further this goal, he proposes implementing a shared serialization format, like SSZ, across the consensus, execution, and application layers. Moreover, transitioning from a hexary Merkle Patricia tree to a binary tree could simplify layer interactions, reducing costs while enhancing access to code.

An Ethos of Simplification

Buterin’s vision transcends technical adjustments; it involves cultivating a culture within Ethereum that prioritizes simplicity. By adopting clear guidelines around code complexity, Ethereum can steer its development ethos towards more straightforward solutions. He emphasizes the need for encapsulated complexity, whereby the most intricate aspects of the code do not jeopardize the consensus mechanism. This approach ensures that while historical rules and complex processes still exist, they remain outside the foundational aspects of the protocol, allowing Ethereum to function with the clarity and efficiency akin to Bitcoin.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead for Ethereum

In concluding his proposals, Buterin invites the Ethereum community to rethink its approach to blockchain development. The goal is to achieve a consensus-critical codebase that mirrors Bitcoin’s simplicity while fostering innovation and engagement through accessible design. By setting a maximum line of code target and embracing a philosophy of simplicity, Ethereum can position itself as a robust and scalable platform that remains user-friendly. As Buterin’s vision unfolds, it provides a promising path for Ethereum to nurture a more inclusive and less complex technological landscape, driving the blockchain’s long-term success.
